What are the best ways to clean laminate flooring?

One of the most popular types of flooring for commercial and domestic usage is laminate flooring. It’s popularity is mainly down to how it perfectly imitates hardwood flooring, while pulling off the same impressive aesthetics. It also has a range of other benefits of course, such as it being extremely easy to clean thanks to its scratch, stain and water resistant properties. Just in case you needed some quick tips though, we’ve put together a little list on the best ways to clean your laminate flooring…

White vinegar and hot water

This would never work effectively for wood flooring, but when it comes to laminates, using a combination of white vinegar and hot water can be highly effective and serve as one of the best ways to clean laminate.

Simply take a cup of white vinegar and mix it with around a gallon of water in a bucket, or you could do this in a spray bottle. You can then apply this solution to the floor and spread it to all areas using a damp mop or damp cloth. Once you’ve covered the floor, leave it to dry and enjoy your clean flooring.

Tackling everyday spillages

Everyday spills that can occur, such as mud off shoes for example, are incredibly easy to clean off laminate. All you need is a slightly damp cloth to easily wipe up the spillage. Once you’ve done this, simply dry the area with some kitchen roll or a tea towel.

Whatever you do, don’t use brooms with soft bristles or steel wool, as these have the potential to scratch the flooring and remove the protective top layer.

For more intensive cleaning

Investing in a decent quality microfiber cloth or mop can work wonders for when you need to do some more intensive floor cleaning. Plus, you could always opt for a laminate specific cleaning kit to really ensure you;ve got the right tools for the job.

Once you’ve created the laminate floor cleaner using the kit, simply use a wet mop to cover the flooring with the cleaner. Use small motions with the mop and take your time to ensure you’ve gotten to all areas. Leave the flooring to dry properly and don’t use excessive moisture on the mop. It’s also a good idea to avoid using a steam mop, as the heat can cause damage to the laminate flooring inner core.

Keep in mind that there’s a variety of ways to clean your flooring and it mostly depends on the type of cleaning required. Be mindful of how much water you’re applying, as too much moisture can end up damaging the lower layers of laminate flooring.
