Tips to help you pick the perfect flooring for your home

Choosing the perfect flooring for your home can sometimes be a daunting task. The decision is one worth putting time and energy into getting right, given a floor’s longevity in the home. A good floor is an essential factor in building the right look and feel of a particular room. Here are some tips that can help you with that often tricky, but important decision…

1. Location

One of the most important factors in deciding the right flooring for your home is the location of the floor in question. It’s necessary to consider the type of traffic the particular room will encounter. Spaces with heavy foot fall for example often require a more durable flooring, such as laminate or carpet tile

Such surfaces don’t require a lot of maintenance, and aren’t easily damaged, so will last in the given areas. It is also useful to consider how many entrances and exits there are or even if there will be any pets, as these can introduce their own demands from the flooring you choose.

A particular hazard to consider would be the moisture that is brought into the house with both of these factors. Flooring with low porosity would be most preferable, so you don’t encounter water damage; surfaces such as vinyl or tile are great for avoiding this. Another solution would be to choose hardwood flooring with a waterproof sealant on, especially if a wooden floor feels more appropriate for the room under consideration.

2.  Cost

The perfect floor for your space should also fall into the perfect cost. It’s really beneficial to factor in not only the cost of the flooring itself but the price of installation too. Hardwood flooring can be expensive to purchase and install. However, a similar look can be achieved with laminate for a fraction of the price. If you are looking for a lower overall cost, laminate flooring is also an easier surface to install without professional help.

If you do decide to go down the avenue of installing a floor by yourself, researching the floor you choose is key to ensuring you do so correctly, as some are easier than others.

3. Style

Carefully considering the style of the flooring you choose is crucial, as this will ensure it fits the rest of the space well. The right flooring can improve the atmosphere of a room, and project whichever aspect of the space you wish to enhance.

For example if a space feels colder, carpeted flooring or a rich wood can make it feel warmer. Lighting is also great to consider, spaces lacking natural light can be made to feel even dimmer if a darker floor is chosen, whereas a lighter wood can instead balance this.

Getting samples from your supplier can be a great idea when making a decision. It allows you to check colour and texture, in order to establish an accurate idea of what the floor you choose will look like in the context of its space.
